Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is divided into four sectors: Buhoma (north), Ruhija (east), Nkuringo, and Rushaga (south). The Uganda Wildlife Authority has habituated 20 gorilla families to enhance the trekking experience. Gorilla groups include Mubare, Rushegura, Habinyanja, Nkuringo, Katwe, Christmas, Bweza, Oruzogo, Mukiza, Kutu, Muyambi, Bitukura, Kyaguliro, Nshongi, Busingye, Musinguzi, and Rwigi. The high number of families ensures the availability of permits, which are required for trekking. Each permit costs $700 for foreign non-residents, $600 for foreign residents, and UGX 250,000 for East African citizens.
Besides gorillas, the park is home to chimpanzees, African buffalos, forest elephants, and colobus monkeys. Bwindi also hosts over 350 bird species, including 14 unique to the area. Notable birds include the African Green Pigeon, African Harrier Hawk, Cinnamon Chested Bee-eater, Crowned Hornbill, Giant Kingfisher, African Broadbill, Ruwenzori Apalis, Black-faced Warbler, Mountain Masked Apalis, and Black-billed Turaco. Additional activities include bird watching, nature walks, and community tours to visit the Batwa and Bakiga pygmies.
After an early breakfast, the driver guide from Africa Adventure Safaris will pick you from your hotel in Kabale and drive to the respective park headquarters. The drive time is roughly 4 hours to join a pre gorilla trekking briefing. In your group of eight, you will be assigned a gorilla family to trek. At 8:00am, the armed park ranger will guide you into the forest to search for the endangered gorillas .
Trekking time can take between 30 minutes to over 7 hours depending on where gorillas will be located that day. On meeting gorillas, you will spend an hour in the company, have fun and embrace their human-like social behaviors. Hike back, meet your driver-guide and transfer back to Kabale for an overnight stay.
