The Kyambura gorge is home to the endangered chimpanzees rewarding you with a memorable chimpanzee trekking experience. In addition. the Ishasha sector shelters the rare tree climbing lions seen in the acacia trees. Still in Queen Elizabeth National park, enjoy a boat cruise at kazinga channel which connects Lake Edward and George. The 2 hour cruise is best for game viewing, bird watching experience and cold breezes. Vegetation in Queen elizabeth National park comprise of savannah grasslands, savannah woodlands, wetlands and forests. For birders, the park is an Important Birding Area in Uganda sheltering over 600 bird species which include swampy flycatcher, Collared Planticole, African Skimmer, Papyrus genolek, Shoebill and Red Chested sunbird among others
Visit Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National park for the 1st gorilla trekking experience. Bwindi is home to half of the world’s total gorilla population with over 450 mountain gorillas living there. The forest is divided into four sectors Buhoma in the North, Ruhija in the East, Nkuringo and Rushaga in the south. You will trek one of the 17 habituated gorilla families in Bwindi Forest. These families are Mubare, the oldest park in Uganda, Habinyanja, Rushegura, Mishaya, Nkuringo, Bwengye, Busingye, Katwe, Christmas, Kutu, Nkuringo, Bweza, Oruzogo, Muyambi, Bitukura, Mukiza, Kahungye, Mucunguzi and Rwigi gorilla group.
The high number of gorilla groups in Bwindi Forest guarantee availability permits which give many travelers a chance to see gorillas. More so, Bwindi forest is a centre of the experimental gorilla habituation experience which give you chance to spend four hours with gorillas. Mushaho and Bikyingi gorilla groups are the ones undergoing habituation.
The 6 Days Uganda Rwanda safari also takes you to Volcanoes National park where you will do a 2nd gorilla trekking experience. Trek and meet up with one of the 10 gorilla families (Ugenda, Umubano, Amahoro, Karisimbi, Sabyinyo, Susa A, Hirwa, Pablo, Titus and Ugenda gorilla family) which live in this bamboo forest park. Volcanoes Park will also offer you the exciting golden monkey trekking experience to see these playful creatures. In addition to primate trekking, Volcanoes National park is a centre of mountain hiking experience being home to 5 dormant volcanoes. Other attractions in the park include Musanze caves, Bulera and Ruhondo twin lakes.
Regarding vegetation cover, Volcanoes National park is comprised of rainforests, bamboos, marshes, meadows, wetlands and grasslands. A cultural tour to the Ibyiwacu cultural village is the best way to experience traditions cultures, norms and beliefs of Rwandese. The Intore and Amakondere dance will be performed to welcome and entertain you. There you will take part in different local activities such as brewing local beer, preparing local foods and the like. Travelers are also dressed as queen and kings demonstrating the traditional kingship in Rwanda. Volcanoes National park is roughly 3 hours drive from Kigali which make it the most accessible gorilla park.

Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National park and Evening game drives.
After your morning breakfast, our driver guide will pick you up and transfer you to Queen Elizabeth national park taking you roughly 4 hours drive to reach the park. check in with the lodge, have lunch and rest waiting for the evening game drive. In the early evening, you will dry to the open savannah of kasenyi plains for game drives which providing you with great views of animals such as buffalos, elephants, antelopes, impalas and Uganda kobs among others browsing in the park. Dinner and overnight at Mweya safari lodge/ Katara Lodge/Park View Lodge.
Chimpanzee tracking and boat cruise
Wake up early, have breakfast and go for chimpanzee trekking in the Kyambura gorge to see the closest relatives of human beings. After trekking, you will go back to the lodge for a hot lunch and refreshment. In the afternoon, drive to kazinga channel for a boat cruise. The cruise provides you with spectacular views of the various bird species and animals such as crocodiles, Hippos, Elephants, Buffalo among others along the shores. Dinner and overnight at the lodge (Day 1).
Ishasha Game Drive – Transfer to Bwindi national park
Have morning breakfast, check out from the lodge and drive ishasha southern sector of the national park for tree climbing lions. Have lunch at Savannah hotel and proceed to Bwindi forest reaching in the evening. Dinner and overnight at Mahogany springs/Buhoma lodge.
1st Gorilla tracking and transfer to Volcanoes NP
After morning breakfast, you will transfer to the national park headquarters at 7:00am for briefing before trekking. At 8:00 am, transfer to the starting point of the trekking trails and start up your hike following the various trail in tracks in the forest in search of the allocated gorilla family. On reaching these great apes, you will spend an hour observing their human-like characters and then descend back to the lodge. In the afternoon, you will check out of the lodge and transfer to Volcanoes national park. Dinner and overnight at Mountain Gorilla View Lodge/Gorilla Solution Lodge/Da Vinci Gorilla Lodge.
2nd Gorilla trekking & cultural walk
Wake up early, have morning breakfast and with packed lunch transfer to the park headquarters for a briefing by the park rangers before trekking. At You 8:00am, follow trails into the forest searching for gorillas. You will spend an hour with these endangered species after which you will descend back to the starting point and then to the lodge. In the evening, visit the local villages where you will be introduced to Rwanda traditional culture. Dinner and overnight at the lodge (Day 4).
Golden monkey tracking & Departure
After your morning breakfast, go for golden monkey trekking in the park and enjoy a moment with hem as they jump over and play all over the place. As with the gorillas, you will spend an hour with the golden monkey’s and then descend back. Drive back to the lodge, have lunch, check out and transfer to Kigali. You will have a city tour to various tourism sites such as the Kigali convention center, presidential palace, and the Kigali genocide memorial center and then connect to the airport for your return flight.

The gorilla trekking experience is almost the same in both Uganda and Rwanda. However, there are a few differences in terms of distance travelled from the Airport to the parks where gorillas live. Rwanda has the shortest distance from Kigali international Airport to Volcanoes National Park (3-hour drive). On the other hand, it takes about 10 hours to drive from Uganda’s Entebbe international airport to Bwindi impenetrable national park although visitors may opt to fly to the park from Entebbe at their own cost. Amazingly, it is shorter to drive from Kigali to Bwindi than from Entebbe because the park is located near the border with Rwanda and many visitors opt for this route (about 4-hour drive).
As of July 2024, the gorilla trekking permit in Uganda is sold at $800 per person to foreign nonresidents, $700 to foreign residents in East Africa and Uganda Shillings 300,000 to East African citizens.
A gorilla permit in Rwanda is sold at $1,500 to all visitors who want trek gorillas in Volcanoes national park.
The dry season from June to September and December to February is the best time to trek gorillas in Uganda and Rwanda. Gorillas live in montane rainforests that can be so muddy and slippery during the rain season making it a bit hard to trek through to reach gorillas.
Trekking gorillas requires moderate fitness enough to navigate streams, climb hills and traverse muddy and slippery terrain.
Gorilla treks can last anywhere between 1-5 hours depending on the location and movement of your assigned gorilla group.
Visitors who want to trek gorillas in Uganda and Rwanda should be at least 15 years old.
Recommended packing list for gorilla trekking include a pair of hiking boots, khaki trousers, a rain jacket, pair of gloves, long-sleeved shirt and a camera.
Each gorilla group is visited by a group of 8 trekkers per day.
Gorilla habituation is the process through which gorillas are made to get used to the presence of humans in their habitat. This process is carried out by trackers and rangers who follow a wild gorilla group everyday for a period of time until it the animals get used to their presence. Gorilla habituation is currently done in Bwindi impenetrable national park in Uganda in the Rushaga sector of the park. Visitors who wish to be part of this experience can apply for permits at $1,500 per person. Only four visitors are permitted to join the exercise per day and the experience lasts for 4 hours.
Travellers who want to track gorillas are advised to book their gorilla permit at least 6 months before their desired tracking date. This is because the number of gorilla permits issued per day is limited as a measure of promoting gorilla conservation.
